To Sit or to Stand? That Is the Question.
Recent research has brought attention to several health concerns associated with prolonged sitting. Among them are weight gain, increased risk of lower back injury, reduced circulation and elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. A 2009 Mayo Clinic study of more than 73,000 women reported that the risk of dying of heart disease was nearly three times higher among those who sat the most compared to those who sat the least. Findings such as these have spurred a renewed interest in the adoption of sit-to-stand workstations.
In this session, we will explore key research findings on the benefits of sit-to-stand workstations and offer guidance on how best to integrate postural variation into any work environment. Common questions such as “how frequently should one stand throughout the day and for how long?”, “how much adjustability is required?” and “what are the health implications associated with prolonged standing?” will be answered. Research on potential health outcomes, productivity gains and cost savings will also be shared.
