Founding Father of IFMA - George Graves Memorial Service

Fellow members, colleagues and friends I am sad to inform you that George Graves has passed away.

If you do not know George Graves, he was one of the founding fathers of IFMA and the first President.

A little history:

In May 1980, Graves hosted a meeting in Houston to establish a formal organizational base for a facility management association. By the end of the meeting, the National Facility Management Association had a constitution, bylaws, temporary officers and plans to expand nationally. At the first National Facility Management Association meeting in October 1980, there were 47 participants — 25 were direct members of the association. The attendees from Houston helped establish the first chapter and committed to host the second annual national conference. Shortly after the 1981 conference, the name was changed to the International Facility Management Association to accommodate a growing Canadian membership.

George was a visionary, implementer and leader that started a small association in 1980 and he watched it grow to a global footprint (105 countries) and over 24000 members. If it was not for his vision we would not be an association today

A quote from George “My advice to the next generation of facility managers is to keep persevering and building the reputation that FMs are go-to professionals and problem solvers.”

Mr. Graves, we THANK YOU and will carry your torch forward to represent the best FM Association in the world.

From all the world-wide members and a special place in the Houston chapter heart, you will be missed!

In lieu of flowers, the Graves family has requested that donations be made to the George Graves Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Online contributions can be made on the IFMA Foundation website.

Physical checks for scholarship donations can be mailed to the IFMA Foundation at 800 Gessner Road, Suite 900, Houston, Texas, USA 77024. Designate “George Graves” on the check or on a note and the funds will be applied accordingly.

Memorial Services will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 1656 Blalock Rd., Houston, TX, 77080.

Hope to see you there,

Your Houston IFMA Board
